Neighbor: ' I feel sorry for the parents'

Neighbor Raleigh Deschazor woke up on New Year’s Day to find police tape surrounding his next-door neighbor's home.

“I said, ‘Lord, I hope didn’t nobody get hurt,’” Deschazor said. “But, hey, when they put up that, something happened and happened bad.”

Residents who live on the street said the sounds of gunfire filled the neighborhood on New Year’s Eve.

“You could hear...  bang, bang, bang, bang -- and then it stopped and then again it would go off again," one neighbor said.

A family used to live in the house where the shooting happened, according to neighbors.

The parents moved out, but up to two of their adult children, both brothers, continued to live at the home with another roommate, according to neighbors.

“It’s a bad way to go and furthermore I feel sorry for the parents,” Deschazor said. “That’s rough…”

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- A New Kent rideshare worker said celebratory gunfire nearly struck him in the head while driving New Year's Eve.

“I went to go pick up the passenger and I heard a bang and I went to open the top of the sunroof and I realized glass was coming in the car," Justin Tate said. "At that point I didn’t know what had happened but I was pretty sure a bullet had come through the sunroof.”

Tate said just before midnight, he was headed east on Interstate 64 near Nine Mile Road when a bullet went through his sunroof.

“It was a very loud bang and glass breaking and I ducked and looked around to make sure someone wasn’t shooting at me cause I didn’t know,” explained Tate. “Once I realized that glass was in my center console I knew immediately because I kind of pulled the visor open and I saw that the sunroof had got blown out I immediately called the police.”

“I told the dispatcher look I’m going down 64 and a bullet just came in my car,” said Tate. “He asked me to stay on the side of the highway. I was like no I kept going because when I rolled my window down I heard more gunfire and I know I had burned up all my luck with that first bullet. I wasn’t taking any chances.”

Tate said, Henrico County Police met him at the Wawa gas station off Airport Drive.

“We were actually standing in the middle of the gas station parking lot and he said lets get under this overhang because it actually sounds like a war zone out here here he was concerned about more bullets coming down on us while we were standing there filing the police report,” said Tate.

Tate said investigators recovered a bullet from his sunroof.

“He said inches would have been life or death for me,” said Tate. “One officer even wanted to give me a hug and the other officer wanted me to go play the lottery cause he thought I was the luckiest man in the world to be here standing with him.”

“After I realized where the bullet hit on my car it was very alarming to me very emotional and it brought a lot of things to light like how quickly things can be taken away from you,” Tate explained.

Tate said he feels lucky to be alive and fortunate he was able to return home to his wife and four-year-old daughter. He hopes by sharing his story, others will think twice about firing their weapons irresponsibly.

“Don’t go firing guns into the air cause I have a family at home I almost didn’t come home last night,” Tate said.

“When I got home I wanted to come back and hug everyone,” Tate said. “I was very thankful to be here because it was a very scary moment. First thing I did when I came in the back door was check on everyone and thank the Lord that I’m still here to share moments with them today.”

Restaurant employee, customer info discovered unshredded in boxes

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- Behind this busy South Richmond shopping center boxes, furniture, and other items are piled at a public recycling bin.

It's a usual sight for Staci Hunt who drops off her recycling regularly. But a recent trip to drop off her recycling left her mortified.

“When I saw it laying in the dumpster, I knew it was a problem and knew it wasn’t right," Hunt said.

She showed CBS 6 Problem Solvers where she spotted dozens and dozens of employee file folders and boxes labeled credit card receipts.

The extremely sensitive information was piled high in the open bin for all to see. All documents, she realized, belonged to the Outback Steakhouse in the West End of Henrico County.

“It said Outback Steakhouse and printed on the folder on the outside was the employee’s full name, date of birth, social security number, address, phone number, W4, resumes, and a whole stack of papers inside of the folders,” Hunt added.

She said she spotted boxes and boxes labeled credit card receipts which dated back 10 years or more.

She was so stunned, she contacted police.

“The police said it wasn’t criminal. Nothing they could do about it," she said. "I think they were just as amazed as I was to find it here. I thought the employees needed to know that their information was so recklessly disposed of and put them in jeopardy."

The CBS 6 Problem Solvers spoke with a witness who said he saw the person dump the items on Saturday.

He said the man was driving a UHaul and told him he was there getting rid of old papers from an old office space.

He didn’t realize how sensitive the documents were until the next day when he came back to the recycling bin.

We took his concerns to managers at Outback Steakhouse on West Broad Street.

“This is an isolated incident where documents should have been shredded and we regret that didn’t happen," Outback Steakhouse spokesperson Elizabeth Watts said in a statement to CBS 6 Problem Solvers. "We take the security of personal information very seriously and are currently investigating what impact this may have.”

“Some of the stuff was hanging out and there were receipts and payroll stubs too. The stuff I saw had people’s names on it from Outback Steakhouse.

I’m hoping nobody gathered any of that information and took it with them because there’s no telling if somebody took a box with them” that second witness said.

Barry Moore, the president and CEO of the BBB of Central Virginia knows exactly what happens when such sensitive information falls into the wrong hands.

“They can take your information and build an entire dummy record. They can get a license, get a mortgage or open bank accounts. If somebody steals your personal information and identity, it’s a nightmare to get it back,” Moore said.

He said just like individuals take measures to protect their personal information at home, businesses should do the same for their employees.

“My best advice to companies? Handle those personal records like they’re your own. Would you want some strangers to have the name and the numbers of your family members? Your social security numbers? If you don’t want that to happen then treat all of your employees like that," Moore added.

He said businesses who need to get rid of sensitive documents should know that they can even turn to the BBB.

The agency holds a free shredding event each year to help businesses do their part to protect sensitive information that could be used against someone if it lands in the wrong hands.

Moore says the BBB’s next free shredding event will take place on the Saturday after tax filing day.

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. — It was a Christmas surprise of a lifetime. A Henrico couple found out their Virginia Lottery scratcher was a $1 million winner.

Curtis Chesson brought a 20X The Money scratcher from the 7-Eleven at 10201 Staples Mill Road in Glen Allen days earlier.

But Chesson and his wife didn’t say anything because they thought they might have misread the ticket.

Curtis Chesson

But there was no mistake. The lottery scratcher was indeed a top prize winner.

Chesson was the fourth and final person to claim the game’s top prize, which means the game is closed. His chances of winning the $1 million top prize were 1 in 1,224,000.

Chesson and his wife chose to take the one-time cash option of $610,874 before taxes instead of taking the full $1 million prize over 30 years.

There is no word what the Chessons plan to do with their winnings.
